Thorpe-le-Soken
This was the first or most westerly of the three parishes named Thorpe, Kirby and Walton that constitute a district called the Sokens, a name derived from the Saxon ‘soc’ or ‘soca’ range from, free or privileged tenure to a latin word signifying a plough. It is a crossroads village with an impressive number of high quality shops, restaurants and pubs set amongst an attractive mix of historic buildings including a fine parish church. The railway came to Thorpe late in the 19th century. During 1862 it had been intended to build another line between Mistley and Walton, but that proposal was abandoned. Some abandoned workings can still be seen in Tendring Parish. Thorpe-le-Soken is where the Colchester railway line forks to either Clacton, Frinton-on-Sea and Walton-on-the-Naze. A three mile country walk from Thorpe station takes you to Beaumont-cum-Moze where you can still see the old lime kilns built during 1869/70.
