Hythe
The Hythe station project was designed as part of the Hythe regeneration programme. It has been developed to offer rail users, visitors and residents a positive first impression of the area, and will also help to screen ongoing construction work.
Local artist Dale Devereux Barker and local writer-poet Martin Newell were commissioned to fill the Hythe station’s new hoardings with text and art. Ideas for the work came from consulting locals who added insights and inspiration from history of the area- ranging from Roman times to the Post-War era.
A Victorian train motif is prominent in the design, and the art and text are intended to work together to compliment the station. They will be covered with a graffiti proof film and attached to railings around the station’s platforms and entrance.
Recently the Hythe area has been part of a huge regeneration project. Student accommodation, for the nearby University, along with shops and other facilities have all been recently built. The award winning, Hythe Station itself is now a vision to behold. The creative talents of poet Martin Newall & artist Dale Devereux Barker have been combined on a series of, vandal proof, hoardings that surround the modern open plan station. The hoardings were created after much consultation with members of the local community. Through text and colourful artwork the tale of the Hythe’s rich history from Roman times through to the post war era is told.
