Colchester Town

Colchester Town was formerly known as St Botolphs.

Britains oldest recorded town was first settled by Trinovantes in the 1st century BC. It has over 2000 years of fascinating history and heritage to be discovered, which involves the Romans, Saxons and the Normans. This history is interpreted and displayed in the local museums using exciting and upto date methods. During the Middle Ages the chief trade was cloth making, revived by the influx of Flemish refugees in the 16th and 17th centuries. Today Colchester is famous for its oysters and an oyster feast is held annually. The town has its own top class repertory theatre, a zoo, castle, park and excellent shopping.
