At the time of the Doomsday book in 1086, it was recorded that ‘Clachintuna’ was populated by some 45 tenant farmers and 50 small holders and was part of a manor that belonged to the Bishops of London. Today Clacton is the principle resort of the Sunshine Coast with miles of golden beaches, a pier and two theatres boasting excellent day and evening programmes. The Westcliff and the Princes Theatres have a varied programme of productions throughout the season all at realistic prices. The pier has been refurbished and is now packed with rides and attractions including a sea aquarium and a reptile house. The recent refurbishment of Clacton’s beautiful seafront gardens has included repairs to the Venetian Bridge, a play area for children and improved disabled access. Apart from the wealth of shops and markets, the Clacton Common Factory Shopping Village offers good discounts on high street stores. Throughout the season there is a succession of annual events to add to its appeal, the Clacton Jazz Festival, the Classic Car Show and the Clacton Air Show during August are just a few. Getting to and from London is no problem thanks to the excellent rail links, just 90 minutes by train.
