Harwich Town
On leaving Dovercourt towards Harwich Town, Bathside Bay can be seen on the left. Rich in Maritime history and elegant architecture, Harwich is perched on the edge of the Stour Estuary. The historic naval port of Harwich received its charter from King Edward II in 1319. The Mayflower which carried the Pilgrim Fathers, and after which the Line was named, was a Harwich Ship and Captain Jones’ house can still be seen. Famous 1600 diarist Samuel Pepys was a MP for Harwich and Admiral Nelson of Trafalgar fame is reputed to have stayed at the former ‘Three Cups’ public house with his mistress Lady Hamilton. Harwich Green & seafront are perfect vantage points to enjoy spectacular views across the estuary. The Ha’Penny Pier is a favourite spot for crabbing and ship watching, it was built in 1853, a year before railway service began.
